Welcome to Selfhosted Sailor! 🚢

Ahoy there! Welcome to Selfhosted Sailor, where I share my journey through the exciting world of homelabing. It’s a space dedicated to those who love getting their hands dirty with servers, networks, and everything self-hosting, whether it’s on bare metal hardware, Docker containers, or virtual machines!

I started this voyage to build a better understanding of managing infrastructure at home, experimenting with all sorts of self-hosted apps. Whether it’s running a personal cloud, automating media servers, or creating private services, I’ve learned so much along the way and can’t wait to share that knowledge with you.

What’s the adventure like?

  • Bare Metal: My foundation starts here! I’ll dive into hardware setups, servers, and the essentials of a physical homelab.
  • Docker: I love the flexibility and simplicity Docker provides for spinning up self-hosted apps. Containers are my go-to for a majority of services, from databases to web applications.
  • Virtual Machines: For some larger projects, I use VMs to segment services and explore different OS environments.

Self-Hosted Apps to Explore

Throughout this blog, I’ll also cover some of the fantastic self-hosted tools I’ve deployed, such as:

  • Nextcloud for my private cloud storage
  • Plex and Jellyfin for media streaming
  • Pi-hole for network-wide ad-blocking
  • Home Assistant to automate my smart devices

Each post will dive into how I set these up, the challenges I faced, and how you can replicate (or improve!) my setup.

Let’s set sail and build a self-hosted adventure! Stay tuned for regular updates, tutorials, and project deep-dives.

Fair winds and following seas,
